MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) – After hours of taking public comment, the Mesa County Commissioners have decided to put a question on the November ballot about medical marijuana.

The decision wasn’t unanimous. Commissioners Steve Aquafresca and Craig Meis voted in favor of putting it on the ballot while Janet Rowland voted against it.

The Mesa County Clerk says getting a question on the November ballot will cost anywhere from $122,000 to $288,000.

New medical marijuana regulations that went into effect last month give counties and cities the option to post and ordinance to ban dispensaries or it allows them to but the ban to a vote.

During Monday’s public hearing Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey asked the Commissioners to outright ban medical marijuana dispensaries or put it on the ballot.

Medical marijuana advocates argued the people have already voted on the issue and it should be left alone.
